An official of Puran Bros Disposal Service disclosed that the company is considering withdrawing its services next week if the Mayor and City Council does not settle outstanding payments, which amount to over $18M.
This announcement is being made at a time when the City Council’s other private garbage collector, Cevon’s Waste Management, is not in operation and Georgetown is faced with a garbage crisis, which demands more resources on the ground to clear the debris.
The official stated that the company is cognizant of the adverse effect the strike would have on the City but claimed that it has not received payments for services provided during the months of October, November and December last year. This is having a negative impact on the company’s operations.
Some areas that may be affected if the company goes ahead with its threat are: Kitty, Bel Air Park; Lamaha Gardens, Charlestown, Lacytown, North Cummingsburg and South Cummingsburg.
In the past, whenever the private garbage disposal companies were non-operational, horse carts and donkey carts operators usually collect and dispose waste for a small fee. This may not happen this time around since they are prohibited from disposing garbage at the Haags Bosch Landfill Site, East Bank Demerara.
At the Council’s last Statutory Meeting City Treasurer, Andrew Meredith had revealed that the Council owes private garbage contractors $48M for 2011.
However, Puran Bros Disposal Service is hoping that the Council will uphold its promise to make a part-payment today.
