The preliminary inquiry into the charge of treason against Major Bruce Munroe,
his wife Carol-Ann Munroe and Reserve Officer Leonard Wharton continued yesterday with chief witness Quincy Critchlow returning to clarify certain information he had previously presented to the court.
Critchlow had appeared since March of last year before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry, and testified against the three persons.
He had offered certain evidence which was tendered in the court. Amongst that material was an electronical recording which Critchlow returned yesterday to identify and clarify.
The man further detailed the information presented after being stopped at intervals by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Sharlimar Ali Hack.
Defence lawyers Gregory Gaskin and Nigel Hughes are appearing for the three accused. The lawyers were unable to cross examine the witness since he had not finished presenting his evidence. He is expected to return on January 12 for the continuation of his evidence.
Before the proceedings could have gotten underway, supporters and other prominent persons picketed outside of the court for the matter to be withdrawn. Amongst them was ex-treason accused Mark Benschop, University of Guyana lecturer Freddie Kissoon and Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green.
The mother of Carol Ann Munroe also made an impassioned plea for the trio’s release, pointing to the effect the continued incarceration of her daughter is having on her young children.
The persons bore placards and chanted for the release of the three accused persons claiming that there was no evidence for a conviction. The supporters also claimed that the imprisonment of those persons was a violation of their human rights.
Only the day before, some of the same supporters had picketed the Office of the President in a bid to have the Munroes, and Wharton pardoned.
