Dear Editor,
I disagree with the view, as reported by your newspaper, of APNU leader Mr. David Granger that “Mr. Moses Nagamootoo is not the best person for the position of Speaker” of the new parliament which is likely to be convened in about a week. Granger expressed the view that since Nagamootoo was a member of the PPP until two months ago, he cannot be trusted with the managing of the parliament, of being fair and impartial towards the opposition. Granger is wrong.
It is because Nagamootoo broke rank with the PPP that the party lost four seats. He may want to ‘manners’ his former colleagues for ill treating him instead of being biased towards them. So not trusting Nagamootoo because he may sideline the opposition is not an issue. Had Nagamootoo remained loyal to the PPP, we wouldn’t be having a discussion today on who should be Speaker.
As I penned earlier, the best choice for Speaker is the incumbent Mr. Ralph Ramkarran because of fair mindedness and experience. However, since he is the nominee of the PPP which has one seat less than the combined opposition in the chamber, and the PNC/APNU is opposed to him, then the next best candidate is Nagamootoo.
It is because of his break with the PPP that the combined opposition has won a majority of seats and Speakership is a just reward for the former PPP stalwart. In addition, he is a competent legislator and able administrator having previously served in government. His long experience as a parliamentarian also is in his favour over the two PNC/APNU nominees who are green when compared with Nagamootoo.
Moses Nagamootoo is known to be fair, balanced, neutral and objective in his dealings with the opposition. He is the right person for the job as Speaker if Ramkarran is not selected by consensus.
