Relatives of three inmates who were severely beaten at Timehri Prison on Boxing Day are calling on the Minister of Home Affairs to visit the prisons to investigate senior officers in the system who contributed to the cruelty.
One of the inmates was identified as Nicholas Dhanraj who was beaten so severely that his buttocks were lacerated. He was reportedly unable to walk. Reports reveal that the three beaten inmates have not received any proper medical attention and are being victimized.
According to a senior prison official, the prison had shared soap and toiletries on Christmas Day to inmates. However, the following day there was an issue about persons gambling the items in the dormitory.
It was further disclosed that three inmates could not have accounted for the items that they were given. They claimed that it was stolen. As a result the men were taken out and “badly beaten.”
“A cadet officer was one of the officers who did the beating with a stiff black hose,” a senior prison officer said.
The Director of Prisons and the Minister of Home Affairs were not available for comments yesterday.
