Renrick Gray, 47, of Linden and also of Paramaribo, Suriname, was caught by public-spirited citizens after a lively chase through the streets of Corriverton, Berbice.
He was accused of stealing a cellular phone from the Evil Eyes Store on Old Year’s Day.
He appeared in court and was fined $50,000 or three months in jail.
According to Corporal Roberto Figueira, who is prosecuting, Gray went into the store and priced several phones.
As the sales clerk left to attend to other customers, Gray slipped the double-sim phone into his bag and bolted out of the store. An alarm was raised and he was pursued by residents in the area. He was eventually caught and handed over to the police.
