As the matter against Collin Jones, Randy Mars, Anthony Watson, Jahfar Sampson and Basil Morgan, continues, the prosecution has indicated its intention to close its case at the next court hearing.
Inspector Stephen Telford yesterday told the court presided over by Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry that he had two more witnesses to present in the matter against the five men who are facing various charges ranging from attempted murder to setting fire to the Supreme Court.
On this occasion, the five detainees appeared for attempted murder and discharging a loaded weapon. This charge according to the police, stemmed from the invasion of the Brickdam Police Station on November of 2009. The police alleged that the five defendants had opened fire on ranks at the police station where at least two officers sustained injuries.
Representing the defendants were attorneys George Thomas and Nigel Hughes.
The lawyers had cross examined three witnesses who were presented by the prosecution led by Inspector Telford.
First to appear was one Moen Gafoor. The man, who was identified as the proprietor of a car rental business, gave his evidence as to what he had done in relation to the case. He presented his information in what would have allegedly transpired between him and the accused persons who reportedly required his services in his line of business.
Second to offer evidence, was Detective Lance Corporal Desmond Johnny. The rank who is stationed at the Brickdam Police Station explained to the court what he had done on the day in question.
Johnny related to the court what he had done after the shooting at the station and what he had found.
The third witness, a police Sergeant Burnette, who is attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters, explained the part he played in the investigation. The Sergeant told the court that he is a bomb expert and related his expertise and experience in the field. He detailed what he had done after receiving certain materials alleged to have been used by the defendants during the attack on the police station.
The matter was subsequently adjourned with all parties promising to return to court on January 5 in light of the prosecutor’s indication to bring the matter to a close.
