The 2012 Olympic Games in London, England and the World Table Tennis Championships that will be held in Germany are among the main priorities for the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) this year with efforts underway to ensure participation.
General Secretary of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the premier international events will aggressively engage the attention of the association. The first step in this regard will be Guyana’s participation at the Olympic trials that is scheduled for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in February.
“Guyana will be participating in those qualifiers,” Munroe said, adding that most of the work of the association in the first quarter of this year will be geared toward those competitions. He said after a successful year locally, it is only fitting that Guyana be represented internationally, at the highest levels.
It will be interesting, however, to see the names of those players who will emerge as candidates for those qualifiers since none of the senior players competed in the National Championships that was the earmarked as the main yardstick for national selection.
“We have not worked out the details of our participation yet,” the GTTA General Secretary told this newspaper. But apart from those international engagements, Munroe stated that the sport at the domestic level will continue its usual intense momentum.
He noted that the Business School-sponsored schools tournament is likely to be the first contest for the year, beginning mid-January. In addition, there will be a calculated effort to ensure that a lot of the new talents in the sport from around the country have a structured programme to aid in their holistic development.
“We had a lot of budding players coming through from our outreach and school programme last year. We cannot allow those talented players to fade away, so what we will do is create structure for them, so that they can continue to develop,” Munroe indicated.
The GTTA General Secretary said that there will be the singles’ version of the schools teams’ competition. In addition, there is also a major sponsorship commitment for an exclusive contest that will be geared toward taking table tennis to the next level in Guyana.
