Dear Editor,
I am not someone who gets involved in politics. As a matter of fact I try to stay as far away from politics as possible.
However I would be doing my conscience an injustice if I do not respond to Kaieteur News New Year’s Day front page regarding Hon. Irfaan Ali.
Minister Ali and I worked together in his earlier life at the Ministry of Finance and has been someone that has inspired me and many other young people.
The headline suggesting that Irfaan Ali came from nothing and acquired that house in two years is totally misleading. Just so that the public should know when Irfaan Ali became a Minister he took a massive pay cut to serve his country.
For more than six years he functioned in the capacity as Programme Coordinator for the CDB Project Implementation Unit a position he held until he became a Minister.
I recalled also then he tendered for that house more than five years ago and I asked him why he would want to stay in the Country just get a place in Georgetown.
Irfaan’s reason was that he loved his village and wanted to be close to his parents as they were advancing in age.
I know of many other ambitious things he did back then always fresh with ideas and pushing us his friends to be better persons and advance our own progress.
I recalled how excited he was when I was building my own house, putting his own physical labour into it. I know many others he helped this way too but I must clear my conscience by speaking out against this injustice to Irfaan.
To my friend I say, ‘Stay strong brother those who know you, know of the kindness of your heart and love for your Country. Do not allow anyone to change your ambition and energy that you have for the development of this Country.
Arvind Parag,
Ministry of Finance
