Up to press time yesterday the man who was detained to assist with investigations into the death of 65-year-old Bebe Jahooral Banu was still in police custody. The man, who is a taxi driver, discovered the woman’s body laying in the lower flat of her two-storey De Willem house on Sunday last.
Meanwhile a post mortem examination is expected to be performed on the woman’s remains some time later today.
Initial reports are that on Sunday at around 15:00 hours, Banu’s partly nude body was found. Persons close to the woman said they tried all Saturday night to get on to the woman via telephone but failed to make contact.
The man who was arrested claimed that he worked the entire Saturday night and only went home to take a bath and change his clothes, when he made the discovery. The woman was reportedly found with a piece of cloth around her neck. One source told this newspaper that the woman’s dentures were found a distance from where her body was found.
Banu was a citizen of the United States, but spent most of her time in Guyana. The woman was described as a very friendly person who always caring to her neighbours. She only returned to Guyana about a month ago.
