Dear Editor,
I endorse Mr. Anand Daljeet’s call for changing the fraudulent Burnhamite constitution (KN Dec 30). Daljeet reprimanded, and justifiably so, the PPP for passing up opportunities to reform the constitution. He also berated President Ramotar for failing to hint at constitutional changes.
Daljeet is arguing for changing the dictatorial aspects of the constitution but he fails to tell readers that the PNC also had several opportunities to change the constitution or remove all the dictatorial aspects and failed to do so, thinking it would make a return to office and exercise those powers.
The fact that the constitution was foisted on the nation by the PNC without the peoples’ approval does not seem to bother Daljeet. He is only concerned that the PPP has not shown signs of wanting to amend the constitution.
How about the PNC and AFC? They have not come out in favor of getting rid of the constitution and Daljeet has not held them accountable.
They have power more than the PPP in parliament. Could it be they are opposed to change because they still harbour a delusion that one day they will inherit the same powers that the PPP exercises?
No ruling party that wins a democratic election would make legislation to limit its powers. The opposition has to take the lead in crafting laws to return power to the people not to the parties in parliament or in office.
The AFC has several lawyers who will be going to Parliament. It is a no brainer for them to file a judicial matter challenging the legality of the constitution. Let the Court decide what should happen to the constitution if the AFC can’t get support to rid the nation of that albatross hanging around the neck of the nation.
The nation needs to return to legal rule. This constitution is a fraud as Daljeet knows it. Since he supported the opposition in the election and the opposition now has a majority in parliament, he should call upon the opposition that he supports to introduce legislation to return us back to the democratic constitution of 1966 if he really believes in what he pens.
