….says significant discrepancies uncovered
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has completed verification of the Statements of Poll (SOPs) provided by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Compact Discs, but the opposition coalition is now requesting access to the originals.
“After a full and careful examination, we have found it impossible to reconcile the two sets of SOPs since in a significant number of instances the SOPs are not identical, which, you will concede, they ought to be. Consequently we are renewing our original request to access the original hard copies of the SOPs in GECOM’s possession…. It is our understanding that you have expressed a willingness to provide a space at GECOM’s premises to enable us to carry out a further verification, this time with the hard copies, yours and ours,” the coalition indicated in a letter addressed to GECOM chairman Steve Surujbally, dated December 30, 2011, and released to the media.
When contacted by this publication APNU’s Prime Ministerial Candidate, Dr Rupert Roopnarine, revealed that the party has found a “significant enough amount of discrepancies in the SOPs to warrant the request” and will make a full pronouncement on the matter when that is complete.
He said that various anomalies have been discovered which they hope to resolve with the verification of the original SOPs, but “at this point the coalition can say that Guyana’s electoral procedures needs to be overhauled”.
On the eve of the announcement of the November 28 election results, APNU’s Presidential Candidate, Brigadier (rtd) David Granger, had told supporters at Congress Place that the disclosures had been coinciding with GECOM’s, but by the following day that had changed.
The subsequent announcement by GECOM’s Chief Election Officer Gocool Boodoo sparked days of protest activity in the city.
On one occasion at least 11 persons were shot by ranks of the Guyana Police Force during a peaceful, but unlawful march.
GECOM in December, last, had agreed to hand over the SOPs to all of the parties that had contest the Election, on CD format.
APNU has been calling on GECOM to address discrepancies regarding the elections.
