Due to the inclement weather the authorities and organizers of the Grand Finale Annual New Year’s Day horserace meet which was scheduled for New Year’s Day 2012 at the Rising Sun Turf Club, Arima Park West Coast, Berbice decided to postpone the activity to a date to be announced.
The consistent rains, which have been falling heavily on the West Coast of Berbice, left the venue in a soggy state, giving the authorities no alternative but to put the event on hold. A new date is expected to be announced shortly. Ten events were carded for the day with over $7.6M in cash and other incentives up for grabs while over 85 Horses were down to participate.
Over eight foreign Jockeys were already in the country including five from Trinidad and Tobago, two Jamaicans and one Barbadian in top Caribbean rider, Brian Harding. While a number of overseas based Guyanese jockeys were also home to do battle with their Guyanese counterparts lead by top riders Yap ‘Old Boy’ Drepaul.
Among the stable that were rearing to throw their horses on the track were the Jumbo Jet/ Chattergoon stables, the Colin Elcock Delmur P&P Syndicate stable, Shariff, Crawford, Habibulla, Jagdeo, Dennis DeRoop Simple Royal, Mahaicony, Rumours, Customs, Ashrafalli, Jagmohan/Jagroop, Night Eyes and Singh Racing stables among the others.
The events listed were the feature B and Lower event, the three year old 1400M event for Guyana and the West Indies Horses, the D Class 1300M event, The two year old Guyana and the West Indies event over 1300M, The event for two years old Guyana Bred Horses over 1100M, the F class event over 1400M, the G and lower event over 1100M, the H class race over 1400M, there were two I class events, both over 1300M.
