Ministers directed to form advisory committees
President Donald Ramotar has added two new sub-committees to Cabinet – the council of Government Ministers, which he chairs.
The two new Cabinet sub-committees would concentrate on Infrastructure and Governance. In addition, a decision was taken to lump Health and Education into one Cabinet sub-committee. Other sub-committees would look at Natural Resources; Local Government; Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Trade, Governance and other issues.
In addition, the various sector ministers have been directed to set up Advisory Committees to offer recommendations on how to better execute their mandate. According to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, local and foreign persons would be invited to sit on those advisory committees.
Meanwhile, Ramotar has seen it fit to hold various “Sector Strategy” meetings, and he has mandated that local government reform.
“Cabinet has already recognised among its priorities, the local government reform, which would be the subject of its very first sector strategy meeting in 2012,” Dr Luncheon stated.
Local Government elections were last held in 1994.
