Gov’t vows to free Guyana cricket from ‘unaccountable cabal’

-Despite repercussion for Guyana’s participation in international tourneys

The government yesterday held firmly to its decision to install an Interim Management Committee (IMC) with legendary Guyanese and West Indian cricketer Clive Lloyd at the helm, despite the backlash this could have for Guyana’s participation in the sport in the Caribbean and Internationally.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon, said that the government did not enter into discussions to install an IMC blinded to the possibility of the repercussions for Guyana’s participation in the game regionally and internationally.
The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport has announced the formation of an Interim Management Committee, which met for the first time yesterday.
Minister of Sport, Dr Frank Anthony, in keeping with a High Court ruling by Chief Justice Ian Chang, moved to set up the IMC a week ago. The interpretation of the court ruling was that the Minister could impose his executive in the interest of the game.
The previously recognized Guyana Cricket Board members were written to, informing them of the formation of the Interim Management Committee.
The IMC comprises fifteen members. Eight of these persons come from the previously recognized boards. Of the eight persons, two represent Berbice, two represent Essequibo, two represent the previously recognized Guyana Cricket Board and one representative each from the factions of the Demerara Board.
Clive Hubert Lloyd was appointed chairman to the committee, which also includes Edward Luckhoo, Anthony Xavier, Norman McLean, Harry Parmesar, and Alfred King.
Dr Luncheon vowed that government will deliver Guyana’s cricket from the ‘unaccountable cabal’ and the administration will press on irrespective of the concerns of both foreign and local affiliates and persons concerned.
