Kitty Public Road fire… Investigators looking for possible arson suspect

Investigators are yet to determine what actually caused the blaze at Public Road Kitty on Christmas Eve Morning. Kaieteur News was told that investigators from the Guyana Fire Service along with the police are working to locate a man believed to be a prime suspect who escaped the inferno.
According to police sources, that person has not been located, up to press time.
It is not yet known if the blaze was a result of a property dispute or what other problem might have led to arson.
A source close to the investigation stated that there was some amount of suspicion with regards to the loud explosions that were heard, causing two houses to go up in flames.
Two persons, Cyril Robinson, 90, and Alfred Stephens 17 perished in the fire.  They were sleeping when the tragedy struck.
The police had reported that neighbours observed fire coming from the building which was occupied by the victims, and raised an alarm. Members of the Guyana Fire Service responded and subsequently extinguished the blaze but not before it had destroyed the building and a neighbouring house. The charred remains of Robinson and Stephens were later found among the debris.
One neighbour, Camille Richards, had told reporters that it was shortly after midnight on December 24, when she heard a loud explosion. Richards said that she peeped outside and saw a “huge red light”. She said, seconds later, her daughter called out to her and told her to get outside.
Richards said that her family started pulling things from her house to safety. The woman’s house is the second one in the yard.
One of Stephens’ close relatives tried to save him by jumping into the burning house, but the person had to jump back outside because of the heat.  Fortunately the occupants of the second house that was destroyed sustained no injuries but incurred significant financial losses.
