With $3million as the first prize and an impressive trophy at stake, the four teams that have made it to the semi-finals to be played today at the GFC ground will all be aiming to produce riveting performances in their quest to earn the right to contest the final on New Year’s Day.
The GFA / Banks Beer Knockout Cup, though organized late, has received solid support from the corporate community and has also been able to achieve its objective which is to reward the teams affiliated to the Body that governs football in the City, whilst showcasing the immense talent for the scouts and fans to see.
In the opening encounter, the emerging young talent of Fruta Conquerors will battle Beacons from 18:00m hrs and this clash should be a real test for the Tucville-based unit.
Without star striker Pernell Schultz for their quarter-final showdown against Santos, they struggled to score goals and only survived due to goalkeeper Colin Edwards’s heroics between the uprights after regulation and extra time failed to decide a winner, sending the contest into penalty kicks.
Schultz is expected back for this important engagement and he is anticipated to have as support Marko Marcus, Eon Alleyne, Jermain Junor and the experienced Gerald Gritten. Beacons after a slow start have progressed nicely and are surely not to be underestimated, especially with the ominous form that Philip Rowley, Rensford Coleridge and Paul Giles have shown.
In the feature game, Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United takes on Sunburst Camptown and this encounter resembles a virtual final with the quality of players expected to face off on either side of the pitch.
Alpha’s line-up is the strongest on paper with the likes of Captain Howard Lowe, Abassi McPherson, Dwain Jacobs, Dwight Peters, goalkeeper Ronson Williams, Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams and Andrew MurrayJnr, all donning national colours, at some point in their careers, while players such as Mannaseh Primo, Selwyn Isaacs and Quincy Madramootoo add enough potency to the team to destroy any opposition on their day.
However, Camptown’s most important characteristic is their fighting quality and they’ve been known to be written off only to go all the way. They are a dangerous team and should not be taken lightly unless you want to risk elimination.
Troy Prescod is the livewire of the side, who controls the mid-field and creates their chances, while Peter Parks and the effervescent Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington are menacing when in sync.
Orlando Gilgeous is as experience and savvy as they come, while goalkeeper Maurice Prince has grown in stature and seems quite confident and competent between the uprights. It should be a humdinger for a double header and fans are being urged not to miss this Christmas special.
Meanwhile, after years of closure, the Organisers have decided to re-open the Vlissingen Road entrance to accommodate the large influx of fans anticipated to converge on the most popular venue in local football. According to a source, a lot of work has been done over the past two days to ensure spectators comfort, while the usual Banks products giveaways will be in effect.
