A 15- year- old Fourth Form student of the Tagore Secondary School on the Corentyne ran away from home on Christmas Eve day for the second time this year, presumably with her 18- year- old lover, who resides just a few blocks from her.
Meenawattie ‘Devanie’ Oudit clandestinely left her grandmother’s house shortly after midday on Saturday. Her mother, Chitrekha ‘Datsie’ Baijnauth stated that the 18- year- old boy, Ramesh ‘Haresh’ Persaud is in love with her daughter and had approached the family several times to marry her. However, she noted that she told Persaud that the girl is underage and that they would like her to finish school first.
He last ran away with her on November 16, 2011. The girl was returned to her home a day later and Persaud was arrested and subsequently warned.
The family has informed the police at the Number 62 Impact Base as well as the Number 51 Police Station about the latest incident.
The girl’s grandmother, at whose home she was before she went missing, stated that she was not satisfied with the verbal bashing the family received by a Neighbourhood Policing officer whom she named.
The officer of the Number 51 Station, she alleged, criticized the family in an embarrassing way in relation to the incident.
“If you see how hard he did talking. Awe shame,” the grandmother stated.
The young man, with whom Oudit is presumably with, is nowhere to be found. His house is locked up and no one in the village has seen him since Christmas Eve day.
The family wants the safe return of the girl since almost a week has elapsed. Anyone knowing their whereabouts is asked to call 338-2427 or 656-4728, or the nearest police station.

I’d much rather they ran away to make a life together than to commit suicide as the two lovers on WCD did a year ago.

“If you see how hard he did talking. Awe shame,”
The ‘shame’ from a tongue lashing – however inappropriate – should not be the main concern of any family who is missing a loved one.
Teenage love is strong and most times has it,s foundation on sheer fantacy. This particular situation is very delicate and could teminate bitterly. Here lies a conflict between an Indian tradition and the law. They love each other and traditionally they could have been married but the law that deals with such matters would not allow for this. Love cannot be controlled by any remote electrically opperated divice so that when a button is pressed Devanie,s love for the boy will reduce from 900000 megahearts to just 30 megahearts so that she brushes him aside. she will remain with him as long as she wish.
HOw can his parents tolerate this nonsense!
Nothing new here, when the hormones start their rampage in the young many teenagers will behave irrationally. I hope that this young woman will come to her senses and return home to continue her education before she reaches a point of no return.
Wuh’ does happen to some ah’ we ‘YOUNG PEOPLE’ these dayz?
Soon to come, the Indian tradition will kick in….just give this Administration some time when all of Guyana will have to abide by it. After all, they are the everlasting ruling party..lol
Only in Guyana…tsk tsk tsk
