“The decentralizing of chess by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) and taking it to the rural areas has attracted sponsorship in a tangible way,” observed John London, Berbice Branch Coordinator of Neal & Massy Security Solutions (NMSS).
The security firm of the Neal & Massy group recently sponsored a Berbice one-day rapid chess tournament at the UG Tain Campus. London, himself a chess player, presented winners with their prizes at a simple
ceremony immediately after the competition.
“We look forward to continued partnership with your Federation in furthering the game in Guyana but wish that due recognition of your successes be publicized,” London disclosed late last week to Shiv Nandalall, President of the Guyana Chess Federation.
Kriskal Persaud, Berbician and former Senior National Champion was undefeated at the Neal & Massy Security Solutions (NMSS) one-day Rapid Chess tournament held on Sunday December 11 last. He drew one game only in the seven round competition with Steve Leung of New Amsterdam who placed second among the seniors. Romesh Narain placed third and Deocharran Gobin copped fourth place.
Among the juniors Carlos Rahaman of Black Bush Secondary placed first, Deochan Narain came in second and Daniel Ramgadoo was adjudged third. Marley London of St. Therese’s Primary gained fourth. The points standings for the senior players; Kriskal Persaud six and a half points, Steve Leung five and a half, Romesh Narain and Deocharran Gobin four each. Four other senior players scored three points or under.
The points standings for the juniors; Carlos Rahaman six and a half points, Deochan Narain and Daniel Ramgadoo five apiece, Marley London four and a half, Hemchan Narain, Leroy Layne and Anil Latchman four apiece and five other junior players scored three points or under.
The tournament attracted 20 chess players; trophies, cash and chess sets were distributed to prizewinners. Reading material on chess was also distributed to the junior players. The tournament was conducted by the Guyana Chess Federation.
