A security guard from Cumberland, Berbice, has been jailed for 12 months after knifing a teen who called him a gay.
Bevon Holder, 35, was found guilty by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with felonious wounding.
Inspector Donna Grant-Fraser, who was prosecuting on behalf of the police, said that on April 11th, 2010 at Number 2 Village, East Canje, Berbice, Holder wounded Nicolas Ramjass who was subsequently hospitalized.
Holder was initially charged with attempted murder, but this was later reduced to felonious wounding.
In his defense, Holder told the court that Ramjass and his friend would usually tease him and call him all kinds of names including ‘gay’ and ‘gay man’.
On the day of the incident, the two teens again started to tease and call him names, even pelting him with bottles. He also claimed that he was just trying to defend himself.
