Dear Editor,
I would like to express utter disgust with the unprofessional, selfish, and lackadaisical attitude of a police officer (name supplied) who was on duty at the Turkeyen Police Station on December 26, last, between the 18.30 hours and 20.00 hrs.
I went to that station at 18.30 hrs on December 26 to inform the police of a matter in ‘B’ Field Sophia. There was a feud between two gentlemen. Upon my arrival at the station three ranks in uniform were present, one at the gate talking to a young lady, the other (named officer) on the telephone and the other rank behind the counter. I asked for the officer in charge and the named officer enquired what my problem was and I related it to him.
The officer was adamant that I give him more information of the matter all though that was not available to me and what I said to him was all that has transpired up to the time I left the scene.
His words to me were “WELL IF YOU CANNOT GIVE THE POLICE MORE INFORMATION THEN WE CANNOT MOVE”. His utterances came after I informed him of the address of the incident, what was transpiring and even offering to transport them to the scene with the vehicle that I was using at the time.
Mr. Sampson’s attitude forced me to immediately place a call to a very Senior Government functionary, the Commander of the ‘C’ Division and then travelled to the East La Penitence Police Station then to the Brickdam Police Station looking for assistance, all because a police officer refused to act on a report because he wanted more information, something I did not have.
Am I to conclude that the named officer Sampson was insinuating in his actions that I should have stayed at the scene and waited until everything was finish including a possible murder and then make a report to the police?
I do not wish to shy away from the fact that there may have been a shortage of vehicles for the police to move at the time of my report, but I offered to transport them to scene. To add to the unprofessionalism, I experienced, I returned with the assailant at 20.00 hrs. There I saw two police patrol vehicles in the police compound getting ready to move over to the scene. The big flaw there however was “THEY WERE HEADING TO THE WRONG ADDRESS. I TOLD THEM B FIELD SOPHIA AND THEY HAD INSTRUCTIONS TO GO TO ‘C’ FIELD SOPHIA.”
The named officer’s unprofessionalism towards members of the public goes beyond those who walk into the station but also to those making calls to the station. His unprofessionalism must be embedded in him since I experienced his rude attitude when answering the station phones also on the morning of December 27.
That, I immediately brought to the attention of the station Sergeant Mr. Mentor who promised to address the issue. In closing I would like challenge the named officer to refute any of my claims including what I quoted him as saying to me.
I express much thanks to the ‘C’ Division Commander for his proactive approach which saw a rank coming all the way from Cove and John to sort out a matter at the Turkeyen Police Station.
