Action shifts to BV ground tonight, Caledonia, Pele, Kings, Millballers on show
Several teams were made to walk the plank when the Kashif and Shanghai football tournament continued at venues around the country. Indeed, the inclement weather has caused many of the venues to become waterlogged and apart from the discomfort experienced by the spectators; the footballers have had to battle with soggy playfields which might have impacted negatively on their general performances and by extent, the outcome of the matches.
Linden was the venue on Friday evening last when Milerock defeated Seawall 1-0 before activities moved over to the Blairmont Estate Ground, Rosignol. It was there that Caledonia AIA had a field day, embarrassing New Amsterdam United 10-1 shortly before Millballers sent Rosignol United packing 3-0 on penalty kicks.
Trevor Caesar and Jamal Gay led the onslaught with three strikes apiece. Caesar scored in the 2th, 20th and 48th minutes, while Gay breached the goalie in the 18th, 59th and 70th minutes. Abualla Guerra stitched in a double in the 35th and 58th minutes, while Abdalla Phillips’ contribution came in the 39th minute. A goal default in the 85th minute completed the humiliation. Leonard Adams managed to break the monotony for the Berbice team but his 60th minute strike was rendered inconsequential.
A heavy downpour just after the first match delayed play for sometime and when the players eventually took to the field for the feature attraction between Millballers and Rosignol United they were forced to contend with inches of water around the edges coupled with a muddy outfield.
Nevertheless, Conrad Smith defied the conditions to slam in the first success for Millballers in the 11th minute. Three minutes later Clifford Campbell brought the situation back to equilibrium and despite spirited raids by both teams the situation remained unchanged up to regulation and further extra time necessitating a penalty shootout where Millballers prevailed.
The action moved back to the Mackenzie Sports Club ground on Monday evening where Randolph Jerome and Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard scored in the 36th and 56th minutes to propel their team, Milerock to a 2 nil victory over Caribbean United FC, while Amelia’s Ward embarrassed Buxton Stars 3 nil on the backs of strikes by Travis Waterton in the 32nd and 64th minutes. Ezra Green started the humiliation with a 12th minute dolly.
The action now moves to the Beterverwagting Ground tonight. At 6:00pm Pele tackle Millballers, while at 8:00pm Victoria Kings oppose Caledonia of Trinidad and Tobago in the nightcap.
Meanwhile, the Kashif and Shanghai duo recently visited the offices of Delta Airline and were presented with two Airline tickets to travel to the USA on football related business. A representative of the Airline presented the tickets to the group and informed this newspaper that management was merely responding to a request by the team of administrators to render support towards the enhancement of the organizational work of the tournament. Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major received the gift on behalf of his organization and extended deep gratitude to the Delta Airlines representative.
