Man shot in leg during robbery
A Christmas Eve night robbery at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara, has left
Shooting victim Trenton Benn
57-year-old Trenton Benn, of Lot 19 Cummings Lodge, Georgetown, nursing a gunshot wound to his left leg at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The incident occurred at around 21:00hrs at his sister ’s home.
According to Benn, his sister is a food vendor at Plaisance Bus Park and her husband had just brought her home and then left. Benn described his sibling as a person who “likes to wear a lot of jewellery” which may have attracted the gunmen.
The man told this publication that he had just finished chopping meat and had left the door open and come inside to sit on a chair while his sister and her son were down on the floor sorting out decorations, when two masked men with guns rushed into the house and ordered “get down on the ground, everybody on the ground!”
The man added that his sister asked “is wha stupidness y’all deh pon?” since she thought it was her sons pulling a prank. But as the intruders continued to order everyone to get on the ground, she realized that this was not the case.
According to Benn, he was about to get up to lie on the ground when one of the men shot him to his left foot while the other bandit demanded that his sister take off her jewellery and kept on asking for her “gold tillery” along with her day’s earning.
The victim lamented that the man who shot at him “came over and took my two phones and my wallet which had about seven to nine thousand dollars” and then went into his sister’s room and collected her apron.
“When dem lef I run to the front to scream for thief and I notice the guys jump in a dark colour car and drive off but I’m not too sure about the colour because it was dark. When dem reach downstairs I hear a next gunshot fire,” Benn explained.
Benn opined that his sister has a lot of friends and he strongly believes it is one of them since the gunmen knew exactly which one of the rooms to go in.
“I think dem bin somewhere outside and went looking and see when she come in and where she throw her apron, because how they gon know where to go and find the apron?”
Benn also told this publication that he warned his sister several times about her friends since “she does got Tom, Dick and Harry coming in she house, you ain’t see how I coulda be a dead man by now.”
The matter was reported at the Sparendaam Police Station.
