Many have referred to him as ‘the next best thing between the uprights’ and he justified
the sobriquet with two magnificent saves to push his team (Fruta Conquerors) into the semi-finals of the lucrative GFA / Banks Beer Knockout Cup after they defeated an unyielding Santos FC on Boxing Day, at the GFC ground.
After regulation time ended 1-1 and extra time failed to produce a winner after thirty minutes, Fruta Conquerors hero Colin Edwards, who has done it on at least two occasions this season, made two superb stops to deny Santos a place in the semi-final as they went on to win 4-2 on penalty kicks.
Earlier, Dwayne Lawrence’s 43rd minute strike had given Conquerors the lead which they maintained until a defensive lapse saw the experienced and wile Gerald Whittington take advantage of to net the equalizer six minutes from full time.
In the opening game, Beacons inflicted a crushing 7-1 triumph over Black Pearl with Philip Rowley (20, 27), Mikhail Stuart (75, 82) netting a brace apiece, while Renford Coleridge ( 10), Daniel Favourite (55) and Paul Giles (57), adding support, while Lowell Johnson (16) made the lone response for the losers.
On Christmas Day, current club champions Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United were made to work hard for their 2-0 extra time victory over a competitive Riddim Squad in the feature game, while Sunburst Camptown had to produce a similar performance to get past GFC 1-0 with former national striker Nigel Codrington netting from the penalty spot.
The line up for the semi-finals on Friday will see Fruta Conquerors taking on Beacons at 18:00 hrs and that will be followed by the anticipated mouth watering clash between Alpha United and Sunburst Camptown from 20:00 hrs.
(Flashback)- Fruta Conquerors goalkeeper Colin Edwards is mobbed by teammates and fans following a heroic performance recently.
So far, quite a few spectators have been able to win cash incentives by answering questions and attending the matches and have also benefitted from giveaways of Banks DIH products and the major sponsor has already signaled its intention to increase the giveaways and cash incentives for the semi-finals and final.
