When colleagues and friends of Naresh Khemraj called Avinash saw him on Christmas
Eve, they sensed that something was wrong – he was not his usual jovial self. Although he did not complain of any ailment, little did they know that he would not live to see day break Christmas morning.
Khemraj, 21, of Pigeon Island, East Coast Demerara, was one of the road fatality victims over the Christmas holidays.
And, of course, his death reinforces the need for the police to be more vigilant against drunkenness, especially during the festive season.
While Khemraj apparently died on the spot, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital around 01:25 hours, after he was struck down on the Mon Repos Public Road, East Coast Demerara by a speeding car which was driven by a drunken man.
Police said that the driver of motor car PKK 9011 was allegedly proceeding at a fast rate when Khemraj attempted to cross the road and was struck down.
The driver was found to be way over the legal limit in terms of alcohol consumption when tested with the breathalyzer and is expected to be placed before the court today on a causing death by dangerous driving charge.
Imran Khan, the dead man’s employer, told this newspaper that he last saw Khemraj around 00:30 hours on Sunday. An hour later he received a telephone call that Khemraj had been struck down by a car and was dead.
“I lef he with de neighbour. He does go and buy souse through de street. I don’t know if he was going deh. But when I come out here, I see he lie down deh in a pool of blood and I see some police,” Khan told this newspaper.
The car that had struck down Khemraj was some 60 feet away, while the driver was sitting in the police vehicle, according to Khan.
“De driver show 102 in de breathalyser test, dat ah nuff,” Khan stated.
Khemraj’s death is a severe loss for Khan and his business establishment, since the dead man was described as a model worker.
“He does do ten man wuk, he’s a wuk man, wuk to de last.”
Khan recalled that earlier Christmas Eve day, he and Khemraj had traveled to the city to make some purchases and Khemraj had made some strange remarks which Khan did not take for anything at the time.
They were sitting together at the back of a canter truck.
“He tell me dat de two drivers seh dem nah drive hard because dem want fuh see Christmas. I did not know at de time dat he (Khemraj) nah go live fuh see Christmas morning,” Khan told Kaieteur News.
Then later that evening, Khan began to realize that his champion worker was not being his usual self.
“I de see it earlier, I tell dem boys like death deh wid dis chap, because de way how he going, de way how he moving. He always deh brisk and dat time, he was down for de entire day. We ask he if he ain’t feeling good, not knowing dat he death was approaching he,” Khan stated.
