The Guyana Fire Service is currently carrying out investigations into a deadly
blaze that left two persons dead yesterday morning at 38 Public Road, Kitty. Dead are Cyril Robinson, 90, and Alfred Stephens 17. The two who perished in the blaze were sleeping when the tragedy struck. Two houses were destroyed by the fire.
Police in a press statement yesterday said that investigations are being conducted into the fire which was of unknown origin. So far the police said that the incident happened shortly after midnight at Public Road, Kitty, Georgetown, and resulted in the death of Cyril Robinson, and Alfred Stephens, 17 years.
According to the police, neighbours observed the building occupied by the victims on fire and raised an alarm. The fire service responded and subsequently extinguished the blaze but not before it had destroyed the building and a neighbouring house. The charred remains of Robinson and Stephens were later found among the debris.
One neighbour, Camille Richards, told reporters that it was shortly after midnight when she heard a loud explosion. Richards said that she peeped outside and saw a “huge red light”. Seconds later the woman said her daughter called out to her and told her to get outside. According to the neighbour the young boy that perished is said to be a great nephew of the elderly man.
Richards said that her family started pulling things from her house to safety. The woman’s house is the second one in the yard. She said neighbours immediately called the fire service.
Kaieteur News was further told that one of Stephens’s close relative tried to save him by jumping into the burning house, but had to jump back outside. According to eyewitnesses the blaze was too much.
Persons at the scene yesterday speculated that a kerosene stove or candle may have started the fire.
The occupants of the second house sustained no injuries. Kaieteur News was told that the family was not able to save anything. Their losses, according to neighbours, have to be in the millions of dollars. Meanwhile Kaieteur News was told that Robinson had relatives at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, but none even came forward in the wake of the man’s death.
