A fair sized crowd was on hand to witness two top class encounters when action in the Kashif and Shanghai Football extravaganza continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden on Friday evening. In the first, Caribbean United of Barbados pulled out all the stops and meted out a 2-0 whipping to Winners Connection just before the feature attraction where Milerock FC stamped its authority with a similar victory over Seawall United FC.
Caribbean United and Winners Connection entered the first half with gusto, each attempting to assume the lead with clever passes and stiff tackles. The Bajans then surged shortly after the first whistle when Carlton Brutus lobbed a free kick onto Marlon Sears’ ‘sweet foot’ and the dapper striker spooned the ball over the head of the advancing goalie to send his team ahead at just 11 minutes into the game.
It should have been 2 nil minutes later when Tellon Erskine dribbled all the way from midfield past the Winners’ Connection defensive line but with only the custodian to contend with, he crumbled and gently tapped the ball into the keeper’s outstretched hands. Thereafter, several raids by Winners United were thwarted by the stout defensive tactics of the opposition and the teams went off at the halfway stage with no further addition to the score.
The rivalry resumed in the second half when Keyon Hollingside weaved his way to the Caribbean United goal and slammed a right footer, but the Bajan custodian was up to the task and adroitly punched the ball back into play. Samuel Zidjigah then widened the margin for the Bajans when he dribbled past the opposition’s defence lineup and slammed in a left foot scorcher in the 90th minute that left the goalie transfixed. The sound of the final whistle sent the Barbadian team into throes of ecstasy.
The Milerock FC/Seawall FC duel was a humdinger after Seawall FC started their march in the most businesslike of manners. Their strikers were a joy to watch as they passed the ball around while invading Milerock space. However, their work was undone by the skill, aggression and determination of Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard whose exemplary performance kept the opposition in check.
Randolph ‘Blackhead’ Jerome also worked hard along the right flank but flunked a perfect opportunity when he was fed a dolly of a pass just in front of the opposition’s goal mouth. His left footed attempt merely spooned the ball over the uprights. ‘Blackhead’ received another opportunity shortly afterwards when Pollard raced down the left flank and delivered a pin point offering on Jerome’s left foot and the striker left foot scorcher settled at the back of the net in the 46th minute, four before the halftime whistle.
The second half was a replica of the first with both teams countering and defending superbly. Steve Brewley almost widened Milerock’s lead when he adroitly advanced to the opposition’s goal. Several defenders converged on him forcing a premature kick that slid alongside the goal post.
Alexta Johnson then seized an opportunity and squeezed through the Seawall FC defence. His wasted shot drew groans from his teammates but he quickly made amends with a firm strike just outside the box that settled at the back of the net in the 71st minute. Kendall Jagdeo, a guest player out of Trinidad and Tobago, must have rued his luck after breaching the Seawall defence only to be cited for off side. Minutes later he spilled a sure opportunity in front of the goalmouth to cap a miserable match. The final whistle provided relief and sealed the deal for Milerock.
The action moves to the Ancient County tonight when Caledonia AIA and New Amsterdam United oppose each other followed by Millballers FC up against Rosignol United FC at the Blairmont Community Centre ground in West Berbice.
