-“Things have been under control”-says Oscar Phillips
For the past few days things have been “hectic” down at the Laparkan Freight
Forwarding Division, Georgetown, especially with staff having to clear more than 500 pieces of ocean cargo daily.
”But things have been under control,” says the General Manager of Laparkan, Oskar Phillips.
According to Phillips, the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) through the Customs Division has enforced a new system called The Flat Rate, which allows persons to collect their cargo without much delay in the checking process.
Phillips added that the new system put in place has played a significant role especially how “it’s the Holiday season”. He explained that the Flat Rate system allows Customs officers to randomly check through packages rather than checking each package “fine fine”.
The manager emphasized that prior to the Christmas season cargos have been coming in but for some strange reason customers have not been coming to uplift their items leaving over four warehouses filled with cargo.
He also added that persons started coming out two weeks ago thus creating a line and forcing employees to work extra hours in order to satisfy their demands.
This publication understands that the volume of cargo has increased tremendously as compared to last year and although
everything was under control, there were some minor hiccups in the whole uplifting process since there were four over-populated store rooms and locating particular items was a bit challenging but the matter was sorted out.
