The murder preliminary inquiry (PI) of Queen’s College student, Neesa Lalita Gopaul, continued on Thursday last with the matter being adjourned until next year. Two police witnesses took the stand on that occasion in another hearing of the pre- trial session against the mother of the dead girl, Bibi Sharima Gopaul and her lover, gym instructor Jarvis Small.
Directed by state prosecutor, Pritima Kissoon, Detective Sergeant Mitchell Caesar and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hugh Jessemy offered their evidence before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry.
Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos appeared for Jarvis Small while Bibi Gopaul faced the PI unrepresented. Her attorney Vic Puran was absent.
The officers, both attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), stated their positions and the actions they took during the arrest and the investigations conducted into the murder of young Gopaul.
First in the witness box was Detective Sergeant Caesar who offered his evidence – in- chief for at least 45 minutes. The policeman was subsequently cross examined by defence counsel De Santos for about 15 minutes.
Bibi Gopaul was offered the chance to ask Caesar any questions, but she declined, preferring to leave the questions to her attorney.
Caesar was subsequently re-examined by the prosecutor, concluding the police’s testimony.
Next to offer his knowledge in the pre-trial exercise was Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hugh Jessemy. The officer started to relate his actions during the criminal processing of the two accused but was subsequently cut short after the prosecutor signaled for the adjournment of the matter.
The policeman is expected to return to court on January 10 to continue his evidence.
The two defendants were remanded to jail in late last year for the murder of 16-year-old Nessa Gopaul. The two are suspected to be the perpetrators in the death of the girl who was found tucked inside of a suitcase near Emerald Towers Resort, on the Soesdyke Linden Highway on October 2.
This matter had drawn much public attention with persons condemning the failure of the system. According to persons close to the deceased teen, young Gopaul was troubled and was allegedly having problems at home. The girl had been taken away from her mother by the Ministry of Human Services, but was subsequently released back into her mother’s care.
It is understood that young Gopaul was entitled to material assets that were left to her by her late father.
