Book lovers in Guyana will have an opportunity tomorrow to have a personally autographed copy of ‘Living my dreams’ by veteran Guyanese Radio Cricket broadcaster Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira.
Perreira who hails from Pomeroon in Essequibo but now resides with his Guyanese wife Zandra in St Lucia, is home for the Christmas holidays and will be at the Oasis Café’ on Carmichael Street between 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs today to sign his books for fans during the breakfast and Lunch periods.
Each copy of ‘Living my Dreams’ an autobiography of the International Sports broadcaster will be sold for G$3,000.
The book, which looks at several aspects of Red’s life from his childhood days when he had to overcome stammering to become Guyana’s top commentator in not only cricket but several others sports including Football and Boxing, was first launched in Guyana in June at the Pegasus Hotel.
Reds, who recovered from a stroke in Australia in 1996, would like to thank William Walker and the management of Oasis Café’ for the support of his book signing tomorrow and his book would make an excellent Christmas gift for sports enthusiasts.
Reds who broadcast his first First-Class match in 1965, is Guyana’s most known International Cricket Broadcaster and is credited with personally helping to mold the careers of several Guyanese cricket commentators including this country’s latest International cricket broadcaster Sean Devers, who was once again awarded Guyana’s Cricket Journalist of the year.
Consultant and former Caribbean diplomat Sir Ronald Saunders says it is not often that a book comes along that should be in the Library of every school and on the list of civics reading material. “Living my Dreams”, the recently published biography of West Indian Cricket commentator, Joseph “Reds” Perreira is such a book. The book’s importance is that it shows that there is no obstacle to realizing dreams and achieving ambitions if one has self-belief, determination, and unrelenting capacity for hard work. Every obstacle can be overcome,” Saunders says.
“In relating his life in a very unassuming and matter-of-fact manner, Reds Perreira has set an example that should inspire young people throughout the world, but especially so in his native West Indies. I say “native West Indies” for while Reds was born in Guyana’s interior in an area called Pomeroon, he belongs to the West Indian region as a whole, having spent most of his adult life faithfully and enthusiastically serving the area in one capacity or another,” Saunders added.
Reds is best known as a Cricket Commentator, but he is much more besides that. He has also been a successful sports administrator in Guyana and for the seven islands that form the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and there is no sport in the region that his life has not touched in some measure.
The affable veteran, who covered the last West Indies home series against Zimbabwe for International Television was the guest speaker at the recent Guyana Cricket Board Annual Awards ceremony, presented a passionate plea to the various cricket administrators in Guyana to work together for the healing of the cricket woes in his homeland and encouraged the formation of a professional Guyana cricket league.
Reds’ book tells many behind the scenes stories particularly about West Indian Cricket and cricketers and is a moving tale that should inspire every young person to set their goals, work hard to achieve them and live their dreams.
