An MMC security guard who is accused of shooting an alleged battery thief was yesterday committed to stand trial in the High Court. Twenty-three-year-old Romeo Jones, who was fingered in the death of 17- year- old Kwesi D’Andrade of Lot 139 C Field Sophia, appeared yesterday for the last time before Magistrate Fazil Azeez for the offence of manslaughter.
The resident of D’Urban and Breda Streets, who claimed that the incident was an accident, was represented by Attorney Trenton Lake.
The prosecution was led by Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP) Robert Tyndall.
The two sides had been going head-to-head for close to two years, with the prosecution ending up convincing the Magistrate that a prima facie case had been made out against Jones.
On January 31, 2010, Jones was accused of shooting D’Andrade who had reportedly attacked him.
According to reports, D’Andrade and another person were seen by two security guards attached to Roraima Airways at Eping Avenue, Bel Air Park trying to remove the battery of a canter truck which was parked on the roadway outside the airline company’s compound.
An alarm was raised and the accused was one of the security personnel who responded in a vehicle. According to Jones, he had taken custody of the deceased, who he claimed had not been handcuffed. The man said that he attempted to place D’Andrade in a van but was attacked by the alleged thief who tried to make a dash for freedom.
Jones claimed that he had been choked by D’Andrade and a struggle ensued between the two men, during which D’Andrade was shot. Jones had claimed that there was a round in the breech in his firearm.
The ex-security guard attributed the incident to a non intentional shooting accident.
