– GTTA rewards National C/ships performers
By Edison Jefford
President of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Henry Greene, took a swipe at the senior national male players who did not compete at the 2011 National Championships when he spoke at the Awards Ceremony for the event Wednesday night.
“While we might be disappointed that a few of the national players did not play, we were happy with those who did participate; we saw young blood; new players came in and made it important. We are happy to see young players who are interested,” Greene said.
He was speaking before a packed house of representative clubs and players at the Police Officers Mess Annex at Eve Leary, and sought to address the absence of reputable senior national players, Idi Lewis, Paul David, Christopher Franklin and defending champion, Godfrey Munroe in the competition.
“I remember long ago when I used to play, you had to motivate yourself, no one had to motivate you to play. You had to love the game. Once you loved the game, and it was you, no one had to push you-you pushed yourself, and that is what young players are doing,” Greene continued.
With the absence of those players, 17-year-old Nigel Bryan emerged as the youngest national senior champion in Guyana’s history after defeating Paul Meusa 3-0 in the Men’s Singles final. The GTTA President maintained that the National Championships were the primary platform for National Selection.
“The National Championships was preparation for next year, and we have already said that we are going to go with those who played. We’ll help to get our players out there, we have our eyes on the Caribbean and the World Championships,” Greene informed.
In addition, he said that at least two players will benefit from training stints in China. According to the GTTA head, those arrangements are not yet “firm”. However, he singled out the Edghills, Chelsea and Kyle, Bryan and Trenace Lowe as outstanding players.
“We think it’s very important to bring off these Championships. We are very thankful to Banks DIH for the helping us with the National Championships. If these persons do not support us and assist us it would be very difficult to manage table tennis,” Greene believes.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and in the absence of Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, Neil Kumar lauded the GTTA for ensuring the continuity of the event that he said proved very difficult to sustain in the past.
“I would like to congratulate the GTTA on running off these Championships. This was not done easily, it was done because of the inspirational leadership of its President, Mr. Henry Greene and I know of the pains and difficulties we had in organising these Championships in the past, so I want to thank the GTTA for maintaining this tournament,” Kumar indicated.
Kumar stated that he was pleased with the parents’ support given to the players, and the support from the rest of the sports and corporate community. He said that those indications are enough for him to conclude that table tennis is going places in Guyana.
Following the two main speeches, all of the leading performers in the competition collected their replicas and monetary awards.
