Dear Mr. Editor,
Kindly direct this letter to Mr. Peeping Tom.
Dear Mr. Peeping Tom,
I am an admirer of your writings. On most occasions I find you to be objective and you do call a spade a spade, especially on the political scene. However, I have to take issue with one of your recent articles where you gleefully pronounced that Guyanese drivers can drive anywhere in the world because they can skillfully maneuver the vehicles they drive. I regret to inform you that this is not a skill, it is outright lawlessness.
First of all, they would not be allowed to drive. They would have to acquire a drivers’ licence. And seeing that they would not be able to “buy” one, they would have to take a driver’s test which they will fail. And, regardless of how many “donkey” years they have been driving in Guyana they will be required to do a driver training programme, both in theory and in practice.
They will have to learn: proper use of lanes (you cannot go straight from a left turn or right turn lane); giving respect and consideration to other road users including motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians; parking on the side of the road in the same direction of the flow of traffic; and generally to obey traffic laws and road signs.
Many of our “skilled” drivers do not have a clue about any of the above mentioned prerequisites for proper driving. Care, courtesy and consideration etc. is a foreign language. And in case you weren’t aware, operating a vehicle and proper driving are two vastly different things.
Just recently I made a left turn from Camp Street into Lamaha Street (east bound) alongside a long line of west bound vehicles waiting for the traffic lights which had just turned green.
To my horror, a yellow taxi was racing towards me on my side of the road. Talk about skill. Boy oh boy! He ducked into half of a car length space inches from the front of my vehicle. Fortunately, my pants were still dry after the experience. Mr. Peeping Tom, I recommend that you take a trip to “anywhere” in the world then write another article on the subject.
Rayman Williams.
