The youth arm of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) is calling on newly elected President, Donald Ramotar to demand the resignations of Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee and Police Commissioner Henry Greene to allow an independent and impartial investigation into the shooting of some of its members with pellets on December 6, by ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
“We believe that should the offices of the Minister of Home Affairs and Commissioner of Police continue to be led by these individuals, the confidence in the GPF will continue to rapidly decline,” Ganesh Mahipaul, member of YCT stated.
He made those comments at a press conference held on Wednesday at City Hall, Georgetown.
Mahipaul further stressed, “We believe that Minister Rohee has presided over enough crime and lawlessness, and from all indication, he seems not to have a clue as to how to begin to address this problem of crime and insecurity.”
Referring specifically to a planned picketing exercise on Wednesday in front the Commissioner’s Lamaha Springs residence, which was stymied with the arrest and charging of seven female members, the Youth Coalition for Transformation (YCT) has vowed to continue their fight until the people’s power prevail.
Mahipaul emphasized that since the shooting of some YCT members, the body has been calling on the Minister and the Commissioner to apologize for what it described as a grave travesty.
The group has demanded an independent and impartial investigation into what transpired on that fateful day. The YCT even engaged in several exercises such as picketing and marches to ensure that every Guyanese understands that the actions of the police were excessive, unlawful and violated basic human rights, Mahipaul stressed.
He emphasized that Rohee and Greene have refused to allow for an impartial investigation into the shootings. In fact, they claimed that the decision to wantonly shoot at peaceful citizens was one taken by a junior officer, when the buck stops at the subject Minister.
The group also zoomed in on the December 13 rape accusation brought against Commissioner Greene by a 34-year-old woman. This Mahipaul related is another reason why the Commissioner should demit office.
“YCT believes that should the two incidents be taken separately, that the Commissioner of Police should at least remove himself from office to allow for an impartial investigation of this recent allegation of rape,” Mahipaul said.
He recounted that YCT was nevertheless elated when on December 17 it was announced that Greene was proceeding on leave to facilitate an impartial investigation into the rape accusation.
