A 51-year old man was yesterday refused bail after he was accused of posting 1.228 kilograms of cocaine via the General Post Office (GPO). Lyndon Claude Reese appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine- Beharry charged with trafficking in narcotics.
The man was represented by Defence Attorney Mark Waldron who fought feverishly to get the man pre-trial liberty in a case that was prosecuted by Customs Anti- Narcotics prosecutor Oswald Massiah.
Reese, according to the prosecutor’s information, was nabbed at the Ogle Airport after he had been recognized by one of the Custom ranks as a man wanted for questioning in an alleged narcotics trafficking issue.
Massiah revealed that on March 24, the defendant went to the General Post Office and presented two card board boxes which were destined for Ghana. The man had allegedly presented a Republic Bank Limited statement as his proof of address and an identification card which was later proven to be false.
According to ranks, the boxes were examined two days later while at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). CANU ranks had reportedly unveiled that the boxes were carrying the illegal substance. The police said that it was after the discovery of the drugs that attempts were made to locate the defendant which proved difficult, until he was subsequently nabbed.
Reese’s lawyer subsequently told the court that the prosecution was unable to bridge the gap between the time the boxes were posted and the time the drugs were discovered. He claimed that currently, CANU officials are investigating where persons have been known to breach the shipments of others, suggesting that that could have very well been the case of his client.
Waldron also said that during investigations, no attempts were made to contact his client, which was refuted by the CANU prosecutor.
Massiah told the court that attempts were made to locate the defendant but because of the fact that Reese had used a fake identification card and fake address, the only thing the police had to go on was the photo of the defendant.
The court then made its decision in an effort to halt the continuous proposal and rebuttal by the prosecution and defence. The magistrate indicated to the CANU prosecutor that his presentation had to be a bit more transparent since there had been certain information missing from his file. He was instructed that he must give account for the packages from the time it was brought to the Post Office to the time the drugs were discovered.
Reese was subsequently remanded to jail but would return to court today. Further Information is to be presented in order to ascertain whether the man is indeed responsible for the illegal contents found in the packages he posted.
