Editor-in-Chief of the Guyana Chronicle, Mark Ramotar, was early Wednesday morning robbed at gunpoint by four men who cornered his vehicle into the concrete median at Agricola, East Bank Demerara.
Ramotar told this publication that earlier Tuesday evening, he had attended a function and then returned to his office in Bel Air briefly. He then decided to head to his home at Best, West Coast Demerara.
While driving, he noticed a car following close behind. According to Ramotar, while in the Houston area, the car rammed into his vehicle, causing him to crash into the median at Houston.
The car drove away and Ramotar said he did the same. However, while in Agricola, because of the damage to his car, it stopped. Two men came towards him asking if he needed assistance.
“Then I noticed two others… they came up with guns and took away my gun which was in my waist and my gold chain.”
At that point, Ramotar said he exited his car and ran for his life.
He managed to flag down a taxi which took him to the police station. He was then escorted back to the scene by police ranks who assisted him in towing the car away from the scene.
He added that it was only after he returned to his vehicle that he realized his laptop was gone from the car.
Ramotar is thankful to be alive and noted that it could have been worse.
“I have two young daughters and especially around this time of the year, I’m thankful that nothing serious happened…all that I lost can be replaced and I’m happy to be alive.”
