Jose de Anchieta Junior, Governor of the State of Roraima, Brazil, has reportedly been ordered to vacate his post by an electoral court in the Portuguese speaking South American country.
His crime was violating campaign law.
An official for Roraima state’s electoral court said Governor de Anchieta Junior and Deputy Governor Chico Rodrigues illegally distributed T-shirts to voters during the October 31, 2010, election and paid campaign staff with cash, which is forbidden by law.
Anchieta Junior and Rodrigues are expected to appeal the court’s ruling.
The governor sparked controversy here in Guyana when he appeared on a People’s Progressive Party election campaign platform at Lethem.
His appearance led to condemnation by several opposition and civil groups, who saw it as interference in Guyana’s domestic affairs.
The Alliance for Change (AFC) had said that it was “a violation of Guyana’s sovereignty” for the Governor to have mounted the campaign platform of the incumbent Peoples’ Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
“An explanation and apology are owed to the people of Guyana,” the AFC declared.
“The misguided Governor must have been aware that the nation is about to have Presidential, National, and Regional elections, and that it is bad protocol for one state to openly seek to influence the politics of another state; even if invited to do so by one of the political parties,” the AFC stated.
The party said that the Governor’s act of being seen and speaking at a political rally in another country is a clear violation of protocol, and international laws and conventions.
But the ruling PPP/C had defended its invitation to the Governor, claiming that prior to the public meeting, the Governor had official talks with the then President Bharrat Jagdeo, Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues and Region Nine officials on improving relations and cross-border trade.
The PPP said that the Governor merely used the platform to bring greetings from the neighbouring state to the residents of Region Nine.
But the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported more than the Governor expressing greetings.
A GINA report had stated that the Governor lauded the leadership of President Jagdeo, and said that Guyana has made tremendous progress in bettering the lives of its people.
