Embattled Police Commissioner Henry Greene has finally proceeded on leave to facilitate an investigation into allegations of rape made against him by a 34-year old woman.
In Greene’s absence, Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brumell is now the man in charge.
There was some confusion over the weekend as to who was in charge of the Force following the announcement by President Donald Ramotar that he had acceded to a request by Greene to proceed on leave.
Senior officers of the Force do not anticipate any major hiccups now that Greene, who has been at the helm since 2006, is temporarily out of the picture.
“Brumell is one of the most liked officers, who would get the support he needs. There may be some of us who have a personal preference for Greene, but we are professional enough to work with whoever is in the seat,” a senior police officer told this newspaper.
There was some concern over the influence Greene, who is actually still the commissioner of police, could exude over any investigation about him.
However there was some assurance that this will not be so since President Ramotar has mandated the Ministry of Home Affairs to engage external help for the probe.
The police investigations into the matter have been stalled as they await word on how to proceed.
Crime Chief Seelall Persaud explained that since the president had advised external help, local investigators put a hold on the work they were doing.
Already investigators have taken a statement from the woman who made the allegations but they have not yet sought one from Greene.
Greene has repeatedly declined to comment on the issue except to say that he has contacted his attorneys.
The Crime Chief told this newspaper that there were some concerns over local ranks investigating the Top Cop.
“We should get directions on how to proceed soon, now that the commissioner has gone on leave. All we have dealt with is the woman so far,” the Crime Chief told Kaieteur News.
