The two persons who were arrested following the robbery/murder at Five Star Backdam, in the North West District last week Tuesday, have been released from police custody. This newspaper was told that the male and female were released after giving full statements.
Miner Cleveland Smithet was shot and killed after being robbed of a quantity of raw gold. His brother Trevor Smithet and Lloyd David were also shot during the robbery.
Kaieteur News was told that the police are looking for a third person of interest. This suspect, according to sources, is the person who allegedly perpetrated the act.
Meanwhile, word from relatives is that Cleveland Smithet was buried on Monday. Trevor Smithet is said to be recovering well.
Caslyn Lewis, the sister of the two Smithets, told Kaieteur News that her brothers and David were on their way out of the backdam when they were confronted by the bandits.
The woman said that the men were relieved of all the “raw gold” that they had in their possession. It was unclear if a scuffle ensued between the parties, but the men were shot. Lewis said Cleveland Smithet died on the spot.
