The residents of Wakenaam have been without the services of a Medex or doctor at the island’s cottage hospital for the past three weeks. Earlier this year the authorities refused to renew the services of a retired medex who resides on the island.
A Cuban doctor was later sent to the island but did not stay long. A Cuban -trained Guyanese Doctor was then sent to the hospital but she went on leave and has not yet returned.
A Medex graced the hospital for half-day but he has not returned.
Patients who require treatment have to go to Suddie or to West Coast Demerara. Only dressings are done at the Wakenaam facility at present.
On Monday, at about 13:30 hrs there was no one in the waiting room. The door leading to the dressing room was closed. Only the security guard was seen in the compound.
Efforts to contact the Regional Health Officer by telephone proved futile.
