Dem Boys does talk half and lef half. But is not only dem boys that doing that. When it comes to the accusations against the Top Cop, it seems as if certain sections of the media are only prepared to let the public know only half of the story. Missing from all the reports on the allegations against the top cop are many details which one would have expected an enthusiastic media to be pursuing with the vigor of a sprinter training for the Olympics.
When it comes to certain individuals who are perceived to be aligned to the ruling elite in Guyana, there is always a great deal of passion within sections of the media and within society to publicly lynch such individuals. Certain media personalities spare little time in going after the minutest of details that they believe would establish the guilt of the accused.
On the other hand when it comes to other individuals who are seen as not supportive of the media, a militant defense is usually mounted. It is against this background that one has to question the scope of much of the reporting on the allegations against the Top Cop. The basis of these allegations are charges leveled by a woman who claims that she went to see the Top Cop in order to retrieve a phone that was taken from her by the police.
It seems very strange that sections of the media are not interested in informing the public as to just what are the circumstances that gave rise to the police having the phone of the person making the allegation. This is surely a matter of public interests and something that the media should have been pursuing.
What about the hotel in which the incident is said to have occurred? How come no journalist has so far gone to that establishment to interview the owners and workers to see what information can be had from them to substantiate what has been told to the media, yes the media?
And what about the length of time in which the alleged crime was said to have taken place. Do the media not find this incredulous that a man who is known to be frail and sickly, who has problems with his heart and his health could have the stamina of a marathon runner?
And what about the doctors that were visited? If what is alleged against one of the doctors is true, then that doctor could be charged with malpractice. So how come the media is not pursuing these leads and seeking to first substantiate what was told to them and secondly to interview the doctors concerned?
No one expects the doctors to reveal confidential information. But at least they can confirm whether they were visited by the person making the allegation and what action they took.
And what about this report about a call coming through in which it was claimed that instructions were given to remove the ranks that were manning the barricades at the Guyana Elections Commission. Is the media aware that the ranks were ever removed? And why would anyone want this to happen?
What about the allegation that despite the instructions to remove the ranks, the accused was said to have driven up to the barricades and was let through by the very ranks who were supposed to not be there? And who exactly was driving the vehicle?
No one expects the media to reveal the identity of the alleged victim. This would be wrong. But what about the leads that are dangling in front of the media but to which they seem to be conveniently turning a blind eye?
There are a great many people who are vociferous that the Top Cop should demit office. They want to see him go down on the basis of these allegations. But what if the allegations turn out to be contrived? What if it turns out that the Top Cop was set up?
What if the allegations turn out to be malicious? Will all of those who are now calling for the neck of the Top Cop demand that the full force of the law face those behind any malicious intent?
And what if it is found that there is the possibility of a political conspiracy at work. Will those calling for justice for the alleged victim, jump to the defence of the Top Cop and demand an independent criminal investigation into the political conspiracy? Or will they still want to have talk half and lef half?
