Shock waves rippled through the quiet village of Prospect, East Bank Demerara,
Police ranks and staff of the Lyken Funeral Parlour contemplating their next step to pull the body from the trench.
yesterday, after villagers found the body of an unidentified male in a nearby trench, in front of a local hang-out spot called “The Island Bar”.
Reports are that the discovery was made around 09:00 hrs when persons who were awaiting transportation on the roadway noticed something floating in the trench.
Upon further investigation they realized it was the swollen body of a man and word quickly spread through the village.
Before long, residents of the neighbouring Covent Garden village also ventured to the spot, out of curiosity. Yet no one could identify the man’s body.
Kaieteur News understands that the man appeared to be of East Indian descent and in his 40s. He was clad in navy blue short pants and a white short sleeved shirt which were both damaged by the dirty trench water.
One woman explained that she saw the body floating from the opposite direction of the spot where it was found lodged (between bushes and mud at the bank of the trench).
“The man’s dead body was coming from under the culvert so it had to come from the other side. He mussy was drinking and went across the other side of the road to catch bus and mussy fall over. He body got to be there in the water like two or three days at least for it to float up. Is a pity ‘cause like nobody don’t know he.”
But the staff at the bar refuted statements made by residents which suggested that the man was probably drinking at the said bar, and then fell into the trench.
“ People can’t say the man was drinking here and then fell in the water like that. How would they know where he was? In fact, none of us here don’t know him and we haven’t seen him at this bar, so that would be wrong for people to jump to that conclusion,” said the woman.
According to onlookers, they became aware of the situation after neighbours alerted each other, asking if anyone knew who was in the trench.
“We all running out we house and gathering to see what the body look like. Because he was face down we had to wait for the police them to turn he over when the funeral parlour people come for the body. None of we never see he before. He not from here.
“Hopefully the man family report he missing and identify him. What a sad Christmas some people will now have,” added one man who was standing on the roadway.
