Dear Editor,
When Benjamin Franklin left Constitutional Hall, a woman asked him what manner of government he gave to the people, his reply was “A Republic, if you can keep it”. All Franklin was saying is, the people will decide how they will be governed. In a republic, it is not a government for the privileged elite few, but it is a Democracy, i.e. the will of the people. The people vote and their will prevails.
When the people of Guyana expressed their will to have a national unity government the PSC in the voice of Gerry shouted “NO”. The PSC defied the will of the people and is on a course to destroy Democracy.
The people have no alternative than to speak out and strongly voice their opinion to show unity of action, purpose and will. We have a Republic and the people are determined to keep a Republic.
Narrow profits, motives of individuals, industries or a cartel must not and will not subordinate the will of the people. Every action has a reaction or in military terms, there is blow back. The people are right. The PSC’s interest must be aligned with the interest of the people and their will. Gerry is facing the blow back from the people.
This has nothing to do with the APNU or his army buddies. In fact, his army buddies strongly support the constitution of Guyana and the will of the peoples of Guyana. The people are in a struggle to keep the Republic and their democracy.
The PSC and Gerry must decide which side of civil and human rights and history they want to be on. In the case of the will of the people vs the PSC, it is Gerry’s call to decide whether he will cast his lot with the people and future of Guyana or the narrow political, profit and exploitative motives of the PSC.
I have no doubt that the people will prevail, the Republic will be saved, a government of national unity will be established and Democracy will live on.
