– Edghill, Lowe continue dominance, add more titles
Chelsea Edghill captured her fifth title of the 2011 National Table Tennis (TT) Championships at the National Gymnasium yesterday, while Trenace Lowe won her second as the two players were again among the major singles titles in the competition.
Edghill won the Under-18 Girls final in a round-robin playoff against Akiecia Nedd, Adielle Rosheuvel, Saskeia Chung and Tiffany Barton in that order after she received a ‘bye’ in the first round, topped the second round and defeated Nedd 3-2 in the third round.
Defending Women’s Singles Champion, Trenace Lowe, continued her excellent form, easing to an emphatic win the U-21 competition. Lowe topped Edghill, Nedd and Chung with six points in another round-robin affair. Edghill was second with five points.
Meanwhile, Kyle Edghill and Shemar Britton set up what is expected to be an interesting clash in the U-13 boy’s final today. Britton defeated Elishaba Johnson 11-6, 11-5 and 11-7 in straight sets to advance to the final while Edghill won 11-5, 12-10 and 11-3 against Scott Garraway.
In the U-15 contest, Johnson bounced back against Sunil Logan, winning 11-7, 7-11, 11-9 and 11-8 to reach the final. Edghill and Joseph Johnson’s semi went down to the wire with Edghill eventually emerging victorious 10-12, 11-5, 12-10, 6-11 and 11-8 to set up the final.
Competition in the U-18 Boys event has reached the semi-final stage with Nigel Bryan set to face off against half of the United States of America-based twin, Brad Belle and Denzel Hopkinson to compete against the other half, Brandon Belle. Hopkinson will play Bryan in the U-21 Boys final today.
The 2011 Powerade National Table Tennis Championships continue with those finals today as well as the Men and Women’s Singles competition.
