Bail was set at $300,000 for a 37-year old man who was entrusted with 386 grams of gold worth $3.8M and allegedly converted it to his own use.
Suresh Ramnanan, a resident of Lot 2 Plantain Walk West Bank Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Sueanna Lovell and pleaded not guilty to the offence.
It is alleged that between December 1 and 12 he fraudulently converted the gold, which was given to him by Mark Mc Call, to his own use.
The defendant was represented by Defence Attorney, Vic Puran.
The lawyer in his bail application revealed that his client deserved pre-liberty trail since he claimed that the virtual complainant in the matter did not give him the gold.
Puran imparted that his client was heading back to Georgetown from the interior when he was given the gold to be kept for a Brazilian national who saw police at a road block, expecting to be searched.
The lawyer said that apparently the Brazilian left the scene and went back to his country without collecting back the gold, while his client subsequently came to Georgetown.
Puran said that it could be assumed that Mc Call knows the defendant and was aware that he was given the gold.
As of such Mc Call reported the matter to the police as if he was the owner of the gold. While the attorney’s submission seemed possible, the prosecution’s facts differed drastically.
The police’s information revealed that McCall had given the mineral to the defendant while in the interior, for him to deliver to one Alvin Paraul in Georgetown. The prosecutor said that the man never delivered the item to the receiver, hence the charge was instituted.
The prosecution in completion of his application urged the court that should bail be granted it should be substantial, given the value of the gold involved.
Puran immediately interjected, claiming that his client should not have to post a large bail sum since the prosecution’s facts indicated that an illegal transaction was afoot and the police was not interested in launching an investigation.
Puran revealed that the mere fact that gold was being transported to the city without any indication of it being declared to the Guyana Gold Board was a crime within itself.
He continued that any gold mined in Guyana must go through the Guyana Gold Board and therefore charges must be instituted on the Virtual Complainant. The court after setting bail ordered the defendant to return to court today.
