Two persons remain in custody as the police continue searches in the Five Star Backdam, North West District for the alleged killers of miner Cleveland Smithet in Tuesday morning’s attack. The man was shot once to the region of his heart after being robbed of a quantity of raw gold.
Injured also in the shooting were the dead man’s brother, Trevor Smithet and Lloyd David. Relatives yesterday told Kaieteur News that the injured brother was resting at home after seeking medical treatment. Contrary to reports that they had received, it was explained that Trevor Smithet was not shot in his head but received a gunshot to his foot. He was also beaten in the head with a gun.
Kaieteur News was told by police sources that the police were still searching in the backdam, since they have information that some of the suspects are still there.
This newspaper was told that the woman who was initially reported to have been kidnapped along with another male were allegedly part of the plot to rob the men. Further, Kaieteur News understands that the woman was treated at an interior hospital and is being questioned by the police.
Shocked relatives on Tuesday said that they had received the news of the shooting sometime around 08:00hrs on Tuesday.
Caslyn Lewis, the sister of the two Smithets, said it was another relative who called. Lewis related to Kaieteur News that she was told that her brothers and David were on their way out of the backdam when they were confronted by the bandits.
The woman said that the men were relieved of all the “raw gold” that they had in their possession. It was unclear if a scuffle ensued between the parties, but the men were shot. Lewis said Cleveland died on the spot.
Cleveland Smithet leaves to mourn his wife, his parents, five brothers and three sisters.
