The Chelsea Edghill and Paul Meusa pair survived an intense battle against the Joel Alleyne
TAKE THAT! Chelsea Edghill (second, right) returns to Trenace Lowe’s forehand last night at the National Gymnasium as their respective partners look on in the Senior Mixed Doubles Final. Edghill and Paul Meusa won the title.
and Trenace Lowe duo last night, winning the Senior Mixed Doubles title after an impressive bout of rallies when the National Table Tennis Championships continued.
Alleyne and Lowe easily won the first set 11-7 against their rivals, who seemed less organised at the start of the final in the competition that shifted to the National Gymnasium. Lowe’s team was well on its way to winning the second set with four straight points on serve.
Edghill revealed her secret weapon for the first time in the game to get her team back in what can easily be called a keenly contested final. She served short with no spin, giving the lanky Meusa the option of exploiting his strong forehand drive.
The approach got Edghill and Meusa back into the game and they eventually won the second set 11-8 after conceding just four more points. However, Lowe, the current Women Singles Champ, quickly regrouped with her partner to win the third set 11-8.
But it was obvious that the impetus had shifted after Edghill and Meusa’s second-set come-back win; they were much more vocal and encouraged each other on every point. The momentum had Lowe and Alleyne on the back foot again in the fourth set after they found themselves down 0-9 in a set they lost 2-11.
Edghill returned to her short so spin serve in the final set to set up an 11-9 victory for her team in the competition. It was her fourth title overall (three in the junior competition last week) and first in the senior contest of the 2011 National Championships.
