Dear Sports Editor,
I recently emailed a letter regarding the non-selection of Sarwan in the Guyana team for the CT20 competition and did not see it published. I am including the gist of it here again and trust that it will be published. I think the GCB and selectors are making a serious mistake here and it would seem that they are following in the footsteps of the Hunte and Hilaire regime of the WICB. Gayle has been victimized and so has Sarwan. Shiv was not selected for the LO games and yet we had batsmen who are inadequate against good spin bowling playing in India.
It is time to take the initiative and do the right thing for our cricketers.
Sarwan has given yeoman’s service to Guyana’s and WI cricket over the years. His ODI average is the second highest after Viv Richards and his Test average, while not great is acceptable as very good, and he is better than all the batsmen representing Guyana & the WI now except, perhaps Shiv Chanderpaul.
Sarwan is a son of Guyana and he is an established player who led his team to 2 20/20 finals and won on both occasions and he is the only player to have scored a 50 in the last competition.
He represented Guyana since he was 15 years old (more than half his life) and is recognized as one of our more progressive youngsters and premier batsmen.
Why are we allowing our selectors to make such paltry decisions? Are we a nation so embroiled in cronyism that we fail to recognize our own top performers?
Is our leadership in cricket so laid back that we are willing allow common sense to wane to political and non-cricketing reasons?
I am appealing to the Minister of Sports to intervene in this travesty of justice.
A Fit Sarwan must play for Guyana at all times, indeed a fit Sarwan should also be playing for WI. We should not let the Hunte and Hilaire administration influence us. After all, this is Guyana’s and not the WICB’s decision to make.
Mr. Ali, show your independence, Mr. Griffith, show your lack of bias now. Sarwan, like Lloyd, Kanhai, Fredericks, Gibbs, Kallicharran and Shiv is a Guyanese hero. Please do not let influence peddling interfere with justice.
Messrs. Ali and Griffith, you both should be independent and proud of the sons of Guyana. You have to carry the mantle of excellence for Guyana first and foremost. You are both charged with a serious responsibility at all times to put personal gains aside for the interest of Guyana’s cricket. It behooves you to do what is right for Guyana cricket at all times.
Remember that Shiv and Bishoo, even though both did not play a single game in the competition as well, but were selected. Your explanation regarding the non-selection of Sarwan, therefore, makes no sense. In the worst case scenario, if you are not sure that Sarwan is fit, why not subject him to a fitness test? There is still time, the other regions have not all named their teams as yet.
Please sit and rethink your selection and do what is right for Guyana.
