The encampment of the Chris Barnwell led Guyana team, which will participate in next month Caribbean Cup t20 competition in Antigua and Barbados, began on Monday and the side will conclude preparations with two practice matches in Guyana on January 5 & 6.
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) announced yesterday Head Coach Rovindra Seeram has prepared a Hi-Performance programme and senior coaches, David Harper, Esuan Crandon, Rayon Griffith, Orin Bailey, strength & conditioning instructor Noshavyah King and Video analyst Robin Singh will assist him
Eight practice matches are planned during the encampment, which culminates with two matches against regional Super50 champions Jamaica at Albion in Berbice and the next day at the Guyana National Stadium.
Guyana won the inaugural Stanford Regional 20/20 tournament in Antigua in 2006 before losing to Jamaica in the 2008 Stanford semi-finals.
The South Americans then beat Barbados in the 2010 final in Trinidad to qualify for last year’s Champions League in South Africa before failing to reach the semi-finals of this year’s competition after suffering defeats to Jamaica in Antigua and the Windwards in Barbados.
Ramnaresh Sarwan, who led Guyana to both of their regional t20 titles, has been controversially omitted from the Guyana team despite claiming to be back to full match fitness.
Guyana face the Leewards from 16:00hrs on January 9 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua in their opening match.
The Trinidad leg of the competition has been shifted to Antigua due to the cost of renting the Queens Park Oval and the planned practice matches between Guyana and T&T in Trinidad later this month has been called off. (Sean Devers)
