With total prize monies continuing to grow, clubs affiliated to the Georgetown Football League are pulling out all the stops to make the Banks Beer Knockout Cup a huge success as was evidenced by the large turnout witnessed on Sunday, at the GFC ground.
Well, another double header is planned for today at the same venue with defending club champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United set to take on Charlestown United in what could safely be deemed as an unusual position for them.
Not very often the reigning club champions have appeared in the curtain raiser of a double-header, they are used to headlining the card.
This game starts at 18:00 hrs and is expected to be followed by the feature clash between Flamingo and Beacons from 20:00 hrs in what is anticipated to be an intriguing battle.
The Alpha versus Charlestown United affair should see the former start as favourites to progress since with the availability of all their stars they seem a formidable unit, while opposition’s pedigree is inferior.
However, the game of football is played on the field and not on paper and every team that takes to it have a chance of winning.
Alpha’s line-up should include national players Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams, Dwight Peters and Ronson Williams between the upright and they should have as support the likes of recently acquired Manasseh Primo, who has already shown good form this season and Selwyn Isaacs, while Charlestown United’s chances of registering an upset will rest on the performances of Mark Pierre, Rocky Gravesande, Kevon Payne, Sherwin Anderson and Devon Charles.
In the feature game, Beacons have looked way below their best, but with a first prize of $3million on offer, it could provide the impetus for an improved display against another team struggling to mix it up with success in the big flights.
Beacons will depend heavily on the performances of Philip Rowley, Jerome Richardson, Orvin Milton, Cleon Forrester, Leon Yaw, Sherwin Grimes and Paul Giles to lead their charge for victory, while Flamingo’s challenge will be led by Ronald Belle, Jermaine Fletcher and Dwayne Layne.
Fans could expect two exciting encounter with so much at stake.
Banks DIH will also be having giveaways during the matches.
Meanwhile, Alpha Coach Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover said that while his team badly lacks match practice, they will pull out all the stops and not be complacent and will go for a win. Dover said that their approach is positive and will be looking for a similar result. With the return of Skipper Howard Lowe and Abassi McPherson, who were overseas, along with several key others including Abrams, Peters and Dwayne Jacobs; they will offer significant guidance to the younger players.
But Dover had a serious message for local football administrators. The renowned coach called on the feuding Guyana Football Federation and Georgetown Football Association executives to resolve the current issues between them.
Dover noted that football and the players are suffering and it is time for them to carry out their mandate and govern the sport for the good of the game and put aside petty differences and egos. He stated that many times players are hauled over the coals for indiscipline, but noted that the officials are exhibiting major indiscipline in the eyes of the players, who are the main ones to suffer. He said that without no players there will be no football and need for administrators, hence the need for this matter to be fixed immediately. He called for the documents relating to the various accusations between the two parties be made public so the players and fans can see the real reasons for the contention and add their voice if necessary and help bring an end to the disgusting impasse.
That aside, all attention will focus on tonight’s proceedings at the GFC and the return of the country’s number one team to active duty; Fans should be in for a treat.
