Dear Editor,
This is a matter of concern to me and I am also certain that it is of concern to all teachers too.
I would like the Minister of Education to explain to the teachers of this country the reason why teachers have to work for 40 weeks in an academic year, instead of 39 weeks. As far as teachers are aware, an academic year, constitutionally consists of 39 weeks. However, for the past three or so years, teachers have been made to work 40 weeks.
I have recently discovered again that this present school year also consists of 40 weeks.
This is as follows: Christmas Term, 2011 (15 weeks), Easter Term, 2012 (13 weeks) and August Term, 2012 (12 weeks).
This is totally disgusting and it’s in my opinion a subtle form of oppression of the nation’s teachers.
Teachers of this country demand that they be treated with utmost dignity. After all, without teachers, the politicians would not exist.
We will not sit idly by and be oppressed by those authoritarians who take advantage on the nation’s teachers. I also haven’t heard the voice of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (G.T.U.) on this matter. I am certain that they are aware of this. I am looking forward to a statement from the G.T.U. regarding this seemingly new form of teacher-oppression, as well as, an explanation from the Honourable Minister.
